A-Hem and A-Haw!

Well, hi there!

Things have been exceedingly busy around here, hence my absence, but I've finally had a chance to look through my Pogo archives to discover a stash within the stash of Sundays that apparently haven't been posted yet.

I double checked against a list that our friend Hun has compiled of Whirled of Kelly published posts, so it looks like this post and some of the posts to come will fill in some gaps in the chronological continuity.

I actually thought I had already posted these, but I think it's because many of Kelly's "talking heads" strips are so similar to each other, distinguished mostly by different dialogue.

Didja miss me? Or rather, didja miss Pogo Sundays?

Happy Sunday, Kelly Sunday!

  1. Thom,
I'm pecking out this THANK YOU note with fingers whose nails have been gnawed down to the quick during the eternity of the past Pogo-"free" Sundays, waiting for yor re-appearance.

  2. Here I was worried I'd be looking at dear ol' Albert hanging himself by his neck forever. Welcome back, and what a fortuitous find!

  3. Sure I missed you (and the weekly Pogo!) I even started to get worried that you might have overworked yourself or something like that. Glad that you're back in apparently in good shape!

  4. Welcome back, Thom! It's great to see some brand-new (to me) Kelly, and even nicer to see that you're still spreading the Kelly cheer to this little community you've brought together. The logic in this strip is vintage Kelly. I hope this storyline is "drug out" for some time to come!

  10. Also - I received email notice today that my copy of Vol. 3 of the Fantagraphics collection (which I preordered about a decade ago, or so it feels) SHIPPED TODAY!!! I'll believe it when it's in my hands; but it looks like it may finally have been released!

  11. ...and I can now confirm that the book is indeed available! The introduction by Caroline Kelly attributes the delay to the death of Kim Thompson, one of the prime movers at Fantagraphics and the co-editor of the first two volumes. That is certainly sad news, and a very good excuse for the delay, which renews my optimism that perhaps future volumes will remain on a more consistent timeline.

I like the cover art a lot less than that for the first two volumes (the Kelly art selected this time around doesn't look phenomenal when blown up to this scale--particularly the Deacon--and Caroline Kelly's painting is a lot less than impressive than the gorgeous work she did on the first two covers). But other than that,a cursory glance reveals another beautiful collection, full of some of Kelly's strongest years. I'm excited to dig in! Between Thom's return to this blog and the long-delayed release of Volume 3, it's a great week for Kelly fans!

    1. I'm sure looking forward to getting my hands on a copy! I'm looking forward to living long enough to see the complete set of volumes.
