Usual Bright Personalities

This is a forwarded note from David Burd, the grand fellow that has kept us supplied with vintage 1952 Pogo Sundays:

"I've searched for one of these since 1976 and I finally got one! That's 40 years. By comparison Kasper Gutman searched just 17 years for the Maltese Falcon."

Yay, David, I know how you feel!

And that's one of the nicest renderings of Ma'amselle that I've ever laid eyeballs on. Miz Beaver ain't bad neither!

  2. I've saved pictures of the mobile before, but I think this is the best condition I've seen the set in to date.

  3. Wow! I first heard of this in 1960, in the list of other Pogo books at the front of Beau Pogo. This is the first I've ever seen it, and I thought I never would. Last year I saw a listing for a copy on Amazon, at a price over $300. I suppose most buyers cut out the parts and hung it up.

Is there more of this? The first picture says "Please see other side for instructions": there must have been something on the back.

I've been a proud Kelly fan since 1971, but I only discovered your blogs yesterday and have now spent much of the weekend reading and downloading Kelly items. Still have a ways to go, but I had to stop and thank you for all the work you've put into honoring this great talent.

  6. As a kid, I had the Pogomobile hanging from the ceiling of my bedroom. I had it for several years, but I'm afraid I did not keep it for the long-term. However, it served its purpose. I believe I (or my parents) may have ordered the Pogomobile through a bookstore It used to be listed by Simon & Schuster among other Walt Kelly works in the Pogo books. Back then, I think many of these books, as well as the Pogomobile, went through one or two printings, and then lingered in the warehouse for years, even decades, before they finally sold out. Some Pogo books I ordered in the late 1960's were technically new, as they were being sold for the first time, but somewhat yellowed.
