Good golly, 1952 was a good era for Pogo — the art superb, the dialogue spot on — and oh to see it all in color after all those years of loving it in black and white in the Simon & Schuster book. Thanks and ever thanks to DJ David B for sharing scans of this classic period—the golden age of Pogo, in my opinion.
And dig those menacing trees, in great fairy tale fashion.

Interesting to see that Kelly started into the 'name- change'-gimmick long before P.T.Bridgeport made his entrance to the strip.

Actually, Hun, P.T. had already made his debut (along with the name-change bit) in June '51. Kelly was never shy about reusing great bits, though, and the barrage of quirky names always made the joke worth repeating.
ReplyDeleteArt-wise, I tend to prefer the '60s strips (I like the looser, bigger-nosed Albert and Churchy). But there's no denying that these '50s strips are gorgeous, and that Kelly's writing was at its peak in the mid-50s.

Thanks for setting me straight on P.T.'s earlier appearance, Craig.
DeleteTeaches me that one never learns out!

I was only able to do that because I've been flipping through the new Fantagraphics collection, so the 1951 material is very fresh in my mind!
