NO!

I have had a loose Pogo image for a long long time, without knowing where it was from or its context. That's the first image below with the big 'NO!', and the little Nubbet Nibble.

Suddenly, the image is reunited with the rest of its material, and I'm treated to Kelly art I have never seen 'til now, perhaps some of you as well, thanks to Samuel, who sent over a link to not only Kelly art, but Kelly's voice singing and reciting the words to this book, in a blustery PT Bridgeport baritone. If you'd like to hear Kelly himself, go to Kiddie Records Weekly, by clicking here.

In the meantime, gaze at this delightful art, drawn at the height of Kelly's late style, post Pogo in Pandemonia.

A big whirled of thanks to Samuel for the heads up!!! And thank you to the website for posting this and other interesting material.

Walt Kelly — NO! — 1969

  6. I assume that you are aware that Kelly did a second book in the same vein called "Can't."

  7. Mark! No, I'm not aware. Can you email me information or a link or something that we can share with Kelly fans?

  8. I own it, but I don't know if I can scan it without ruining it. I'll see what I can do on the weekend.

I'm not aware of it online anywhere.

  11. Eric! You can finally comment here!

Folks, Eric is one of this blog's most vital contributors, and he hasn't been able to leave comments, evidently due to browser issues.

    Welcome Eric!

  12. Yay! A good post to do it on, since this is one of the best finds you've had yet here.

I had known about NO! for a while, but only the audio portion. It's on the digital version of Songs of the Pogo:

  13. Eric: I have the SONGS OF THE POGO version of this as well. Interesting to see Kelly "come back to it" years later.

  14. Great find. The Kiddie Records page has a link to the Youtube video where you can view the images being narrated by Kelly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iRX-WYQzT0

Speaking of Youtube there are some amazing videos there. Here is one that was taken from a VHS video titled "The Pogo Special Birthday Special":

Finally, getting back to the Kiddie Records page I think it's safe to say many Pogophiles were also fans of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Here is audio from the album that was made at the time that "Rocky and His Friends" was first airing, including new songs and segments from the show:

  15. The SONGS OF THE POGO CD includes both this and "Can't" as bonus tracks, but they weren't part of the original LP release. They were originally released in 1969, concurrent with the books. After having heard the audio version a few years ago, it's phenomenal to see the accompanying illustrations. I hope you get your hands on "Can't" at some point, Thom, so you can share with the rest of us!

The repeated references to rhinoceri, dinosaurs, etc. are kind of odd, considering that only an owl is ever shown. I wonder, is this some VERY subtle goofiness by Kelly, or perhaps the result of some last-minute editorial mixup?

The "Lulla Boy" lyric is reminiscent of "Lullaby, Lilly Boy" in Kelly's most famous composition. :)

  16. I thought those references to other critters were way weird, though cute.

And thanks to Mark, I'll be posting "Can't" soon, but other than the cover it will have to be in black and white at this time. Still, WAY better than nothing, huh?
