Spirit of Kelly

One more Doyle and Sternecky before returning to Kelly.  I admire that these two guys made great effort to keep the spirit of Kelly alive. That's just what we're attempting to do with this blog.

Long Live Kelly!

Easter Sunday, 1989

  1. I think this is the best thing they ever did as far as I've seen here. It's gorgeous.

  2. Worthy to stand alongside any of
    the Kelly Easter Sunday strips;
    but you posted it a month early.

  3. That is just fine! There is no mistaking that it was different cartoonists doing something in the same spirit, but they did capture the spirit. There is no way to look at that strip without smiling. Thank you!

  4. I'm curious about the blotchy, almost marker-jab-y sky (not much on graphic art terminology, am I). Is that something Kelly ever did, or did Doyle and Sternecky add that? It works, and I like it.

    1. Kevin, it looks to me like a different reproduction method — like the color guide was done in watercolor wash and used as an actual color separation scan. I don't think newspapers could easily do that in Kelly's time, as registration would need to be more critical than ever, or it would be a muddy mess.
