A Whole Week Past Valentine's Day

Oh ho! Now we know there are 11 husbands in the area and they...um...they...hmm...well...

  1. What we don't know is who are them 11 husbands! We were countin' 'em a while back and din't get that high.

And, yeah, every last one of 'em, whatever he may have done with his Missus, sent a valentine to Ma'm'selle -- a dubious act made more conspicuous by not sendin' one to Miz Beaver!

I'm afraid, though, that the main joke may depend partly on sneering at Miz Beaver for being unattractive -- a "loser" in the race to catch a man.

Or mebbe not! Mebbe Miz Beaver's point has been made better than she could make it herself -- that all them mens is critturs of dee-ceit. Even the 19 "eligible mens" is inter'sted only in flirtin' with Ma'm'selle -- not in gettin' serious. (Later, at the end of Prisoner of Love, Pogo does start movin' in that direction, but never gets to the natural conclusion before Kelly's death.)

  2. I just noticed (belatedly) that the count in this 1962 strip is higher than on Valentine's Day of 1955. In that strip Choo Choo Curtis (aka Mailman Duck) tells Ma'm'selle he's left all the cards that were sent to her in a holler stump and is bringing their greetings personal -- SMISH! with a kiss on the nose. And now he's "through" -- gonna turn in his whistle and cancel all his stamps. But Ma'm'selle says:

"Alors! Un, deux, trois.... Through? Mais NON! I should have gotting SIX more greeting! No, M'sieur?"

Only 7 expected in 1955; 30 received in 1962. That puzzle shoulda been on the agenda for the Great Thinking Contest (which was happening at the time, in '55).
