The Wicked Truth

In one of the comments recently, Jannes made a good point (one that I hadn't yet distilled, though it was vague in my mind) (and I'm paraphrasing here) that a number of Pogo strips from this time were basically 'talking heads' with their silly conversations, but Kelly's lovely art and way with words, keeps them fun and interesting.

Nobody celebrated Christmas, graphically, the way Kelly did, with total abandoned glee and musical joy. The black backgrounds always added punch on a page and had the atmosphere of deep winter. It was a pictorial gift to his fans, most every year.
