Celebrating Creativity

This is a reminder that this Sunday, August 25, is Walt Kelly's 100th Birthday, and our new zine, Delineated Life, will be rolling out its tribute issue, entirely dedicated to Kelly.

I say that so confidently and calmly, even though I only have a couple of days left to pull it all together and get it up online as I'm way working on other deadlines. Oy.

Pictorial Arts Journal is the papa publication of Delineated Life, so it's proudly presenting this promotional 'poster' to remind you to check in on Sunday.

I'm going to bed 'early' tonight, so I'm posting this Sunday, Kelly Sunday on Saturday night. This is the last segment of this story arc. The strip following this one has already been posted on this blog somewhere in the distant past.

Actually, to the pain and misery of some of you, I'm going to skip the Sunday, Kelly Sunday postings for at least a coupla weeks. Now don't get too upset. By doing so I will be able to start posting other Kelly material that I haven't taken time to prepare yet. Most of it is pretty special stuff that I don't want getting buried by Sunday after Sunday posting . . .  at least for a while. Also, that will give me a chance to take inventory of what's left of the Sundays stash, because, well, we've posted a lot of strips and sooner or later, sob, we're gonna run out of what I've clipped. I need to figure out just how much longer this can go on. Don't panic yet—let's jes' see what's what.

So, stay 'tooned!

Happy 1951, 1952, and 1953

Yes, I posted this first image last year, but it's too beauty to not pull up again.

Further below are New Year's Day strips from 1951, 1952, and 1953 — my three favorite years of Kelly art and story, not that all the other years weren't great. I know you've seen these before, so sue me (actually don't, I've got too much on my calendar as it is).

Above, yes, at that time Kelly was signing some funny little names — a different one per strip.

Best Laid Eggs of Mice Nor Men

This is the follow-up Sunday to the last post. These two Sundays were sort of stand-alones in the middle of a long arc, of which I will post sometime soon.

The quality of the press runs at this time were somewhat spotty (literally), so I'm spending a bit more time than usual trying to get the cleanest scans I can. In my opinion, this era marks the beginning of the decline of quality that newspapers suffered, lasting to this day—40 years later.
