Pogofenokee

1952 is one of my favorite years for several reasons, one of which was the flowering beauty of Walt Kelly's art. This is his double page spread from Life Magazine. A very tip top Kelly favorite of all time.

1952

This Kelly self-portrait is from 1952, which so happens is my favorite year of Kelly. Oh he's had many a great year. But for me, 1952 was a year of perfect Kelly--art, characterization and story.
Coming up in my next post will be one of my very top favorite Kelly drawings, that just so happens to be from . . . wait for it . . . 1952.

A Fair Young Lad Named Bloommigan

No matter how busy I am, I just can't seem to skip a Sunday without posting a Sunday.

Hrrm. We're getting lots of hits, but hardly any comments. Is anybody out there 'tooning into this stuff? Should I just pack it all up and put it all away? Are y'all Kellyed out?

Gubbins

Kelly's cartoon illustrations made the early comic book compulsory text pages very readable.

I'm sure from a different angle Saddleback Mountain would more resemble Kelly's drawing.

On the Icy Plains of Mars

A fine example of an early Pogo Sunday, with a beautiful Pogo logo. Jes' one of a number of efforts by these fellows to reach another planet. This one, 14 years before they make it as far as Pandemonia.

Whip My Weight in Wild Caribou

This is the continuation and conclusion of the previous Sunday post. Use of sunset colors was a nice change of pace.
